How to Measure Outboard Shaft Length for Your Transom

The table below gives a guide to the correct engine for your transom height - simply measure your transom from the bottom of the hull to the top of your transom, from the centre line.

* Ease of Installation -  Due to their compact size, short shaft motors are easier to install and remove.

Disadvantages of Short Shaft Motors:

* Limited to Small Boats - their use is restricted to boats with low transoms.

* Performance Issues - If used on boats with higher transoms, they may suffer from performance inefficiencies and increased risk of damage.

Long Shaft Outboard Motors

Long shaft outboard motors typically have a shaft length of around 20 inches (50 cm). These motors are designed for boats with a transom height of approximately 20 inches. Long shaft motors are commonly used on medium-sized boats, such as larger RIBS, sailboats, small fishing boats, and larger inflatable boats. The longer shaft length ensures that the propeller remains submerged, even in rougher waters, providing consistent performance.

Advantages of Long Shaft Motors:

* Versatility - Suitable for a wide range of boats, including those used in choppier waters.

* Enhanced Performance - Better suited for maintaining propeller submersion, reducing cavitation.

* Stability - Provides better thrust in rough waters, improving boat handling and stability.

Disadvantages of Long Shaft Motors:

* Increased Weight - Generally heavier than short shaft motors, making them harder to transport and install.

* Higher Cost - Sometimes more expensive due to their larger size and greater versatility.

Extra Long Shaft Outboard Motors

Extra long shaft outboard motors typically have a shaft length of around 25 inches (63 cm). These motors are designed for boats with a transom height of approximately 25 inches. Extra long shaft motors are commonly used on larger boats and sailboats that require deeper submersion of the propeller for optimal performance, especially in rough seas or when heavy loads are carried.

Extra Extra Long Shaft Outboard Motors

Extra extra long shaft outboard motors typically have a shaft length of around 30 inches (76 cm) or more. These motors are designed for boats with a transom height of approximately 30 inches or higher. Extra extra long shaft motors are used on large boats, commercial vessels, and some specialty applications where maximum propeller depth is crucial for performance and safety.

Advantages of Extra Extra Long Shaft Motors:

* Maximum Propeller Depth - Ensures the propeller remains submerged in the deepest and roughest waters.

* Optimal for Heavy Loads - Provides powerful thrust needed for large, heavily loaded boats.

Disadvantages of Extra Extra Long Shaft Motors:
